Fewer pesticides needed to control blight

Blight resistant potatoes means it may be possible for fewer fungicides (blight control) to be applied to crops. Field trials have demonstrated that late blight resistance against common North American strains has the potential to reduce fungicide applications and save crops from a devastating disease.

Resource efficiency

Based on estimates from academic consultants, if all Russet Burbank potatoes in the United States had Innate Gen 2 traits, it is estimated that potato waste (in-field, during storage, packing, retail and foodservice for fresh potatoes) could be reduced by 986 million pounds. In addition, CO2 emissions could be reduced by 146 million pounds, water usage reduced by 17 billion gallons, and a total of 495,000 fewer pesticide acre-applications would be needed.


Less waste and higher value yields

With blight resistance and a higher quality potato that is less likely to be rejected due to bruising and sugar content, growers and packers will waste less and experience a more efficient per-acre utilization during potato production.



The non-browning trait also helps reduce waste from pressure bruise, a common condition from potato shipping and storage.


Cold storage with reduced sugars

When compared to conventional Russet Burbank’s, Innate® Burbank Gen 2 can be stored at lower temperatures with consistently lower glucose. By lessening reducing sugars, processing potatoes can be stored cold, which reduces sprouting, weight loss and disease damage. An added benefit of storing under colder temperatures is a reduction in evaporative shrinkage, which increases marketable yield as a result of reduced respiration.



Innate® Generation 2 lowers asparagine levels even more, which means that acrylamide levels can be reduced by up to 90% or more.

Innate potatoes are biotech crops less prone to bruising and black spots, which means consumers waste less and fewer potatoes end up in landfill.

The photo below is from a 2014 potato growing field trial. This sample of conventional potatoes and Innate® Gen 2 plants were inoculated with common late blight strains. The conventional potatoes show clear signs of disease, while the Innate Gen 2 plants have healthy foliage. No late blight fungicides were used in this trial.
